Welcome to EDCI 271!

This blog contains all the information you need to successfully complete EDCI 271: Classroom Applications of Educational Technology. This will be a hybrid course which means part of the time we will meet face to face, and the rest of the time we will meet in hyperspace! This will help you understand how technology can be used to teach and learn. You will be able to discuss more knowledgably about the pros and cons of distance education after having this experience.

Wow! The article really hits home. The problems teachers face trying to use technology in the classroom are the same problems I face at home trying to get the laundry put away! There are so many outside forces and so many other things to do, that we simply fall into a routine and do what absolutely has to be done. HOWEVER, I would like to use technology from the very start of my career. I would like to make technology a "have-to-do" thing and find ways to integrate it often. I will educate myself and bring my own laptop it need be. I want to be able to diagnose and fix my own computer problems. I also want to be an educator that can help support other educators who aren't as "up" on technology.

Isn't it funny how so many of teachers and even future teachers use technology in their own homes, but are afraid to use it in their own classrooms? It could be easy to point fingers at them and wonder why this is. However, I have to say that I don't blame them entirely. Its understandable to think technolgy isnt always reliable and there are so many other commitments teachers have to worry about other than wondering if the computer or powerpoint will work.
The best way I believe I can shift away from this thinking is to take this class "by the horns" and learn as much as I can. If I learn and get excited about it, I can better put it to use in my classroom--by having passion for it! And, if excited, I can share that passion with other teachers who feel the same stumbling block I have felt with it!

I agree with what has been said so far. I also hope to learn a lot in this class (these classes) so that I can get excited about being much more informed about all the possibilities I will in front of me to use technology to enhance my teaching. Cuban does make a good argument about teachers just being too busy to invest much time into technology and about all the crashes happening and what not. But even though I'm sure I'll experience feeling overwhelmed, I still hope that I will try to MAKE time to invest into planning ways to use technology in my classroom and that I keep reminding myself it is in fact beneficial. And as far as failures and crashes go, it's a good idea to save often and have back-up plans. =)

After reading this article I can now see, from a future educator's point of view, that technology use and integration within the classroom can be hard if not impossible at times. You never really step back and see how many free hours in a day that you have until you break it down and then it does not add up to much. If we have little free time and experience with technology then it can become very overwhelming in trying to integrate it within the classroom. I think the main reason why we can be frustrated with technology is that when we have a question or problem no one seems to be able to help in trying to solve it. I think that it is great that we are being introduced to the different forms of technology at the college level where we have support and guidance in what we are doing. Not knowing where to start is the scariest part. I can become a leader by sharing with my peers all that I know about technology and vice-versa. I think the best way to learn is from each other. Once we learn the technology, we will then be able to share what we have learned to our classrooms.

This article has been a sigh of relief for me knowing that i'm not the only kid nation person out there hahaha. Anyways to get back on track, I believe the best way I could use technology and also be productive when using it is to always keep up with the updates that computer companies always make.Ever since I was in elementary school i've been learning to keep up with the "now-a-days" computers and their programs. When i do become a teacher I want to start out fresh and not be afraid to use technology for when it comes to school. I always find time to try and educate myself on the latest things in computers.

I agree with Sara....its an interesting observation that educators use personal computers for their own needs (grading, lesson plans, etc) but fail to incorporate any of that technology into the classroom. It cannot soley be blamed on teachers being apprehensive of having technology in the classrooms (and the tech. problems that come with) but also that there are many time restraints on a teacher-having a lot to do in short amounts of time. However, I feel that if educators took the time to learn the technology and programs more efficently then maybe that will give them more time to be "bigger and better" in the classroom. I personally want to learn as much as I can in this class because I love the idea of having technology in the classroom. I want to be able to engage my students in a creative way and use all my resources to not only my advantage but for my students.

I found it a little surprising that teachers use their computers more at home then at school, it seems like such a waste of technology. I do understand that technology is not perfect and if something were to happen with the computers at the school, it is the school's responsibility to have them fixed...which can get costly. But at the same time it's something that we just have to deal with as future teachers because glitches happen and that's when WE need to be prepared for a Plan B.

This didn't suprise me in the least. Don't we all use our computers for the fun stuff or to get the paper done? But when do we incorporate it into our lesson plans. We are so quick to find a great activity incorporating one or many of the multiple intelligences, but what about incorporating technology? Is it safe to believe that if one student learns better by listening to a lesson another student may learn better by doing a program on the computer? My goal as a teacher is to teach the whole child, and if that child learns better through technology, then I am obligated to embrace it and implement it into my classroom. I know that I tend to teach lessons through methods that I learn best through, so it will be a challenge to try to cover other methods-including technology. I, too, will try to use technology right from the beginning of my teaching career. I am very excited about this class and to open my eyes to all of the possibilities that technology holds for my future classroom.

This article was amazing because it help me see how teacher are struggling to incorporate technology. I want to set an example to these teacher by using technology in my classroom so that they might come out of their box and see that technology is not that bad.
I want to struggle a liitle but accomplish my goal on using technology in my classroom. I want to teacher who are havin g a hard time with this to see that it ok to struggle but learn from that experience of struggling with technology.

This article didn’t surprise me much at all. So many people use computers daily either to talk to one another, do homework, or even just to play games. We have fun with technology but are to scared to incorporate it into the classrooms. The cost of technology is not cheep and to fix a problem or virus could be costly but at the same time technology offers you to use multiple intelligences with the children. As future teaches we will have to deal with this problem and fix any glitches that may occur. We must be prepared for the worse. Technology is one day going to take over and I hope to start using it from the beginning of my teaching career. This class has me very excited and I cant wait to learn more possibilities that technology holds for my future.

After reading this article I can honestly understand why teachers are so apprehensive about using tech. in their classrooms. There are so many demands on their time in so many different areas that the use of computers can seem overwhelming. The cost of maintainance and the possibility of the computers becoming unreliable at times is an issue that needs to be pursued further. Having used the computers with preschoolers & in the Christian school with various grade levels, I feel that it is fastly becoming a very useful tool in effective communication of information for students to make use of manipulatives on the comp. and learn to grow in knowlege of several different subjects.
I have talked with different educators about the possibility of daily or even weekly incorporation of tech. in the curriculum. Some are afraid that our society will become so high tech that they will be replaced. Others are just afraid of change, learning how to utilize ideas of different technologies. There are those who are strongly opposed to the idea altogether because of time restraints. The rest simply like the way they have been doing things having made their own routines, not really varying from or creatively differing their routines, thus feeling that the students will become more dependent on computers and use their minds less.
I am excited about this class and have learned more than I have in other tech. classes that I want to try to make the concertive and creative effort in utilizing the technology out there in positive ways thus making learning more engaging, exciting, and inviting for the students to genuinely want/yearn to know more about the world and what is of interest to them. Even though cost is a factor, as well as time, our responsibility needs to be that the children learn by our experiences, knowledge, and our actions. I feel we need to try harder to make the time to do this. Are we wanting to teach to have a job? Or are we there to make a unique difference and encourage the kids, which is more important?
